D30 Trimsamsa Chart Calculator

A free trimsamsa (D30) chart calculator - the one varga of the twenty-three drawn here that is not an equal division, but five unequal arcs of 5, 5, 8, 7 and 5 degrees.

Every other divisional chart splits a 30-degree sign into n equal parts. The Trimsamsa does not. Each sign is cut into five spans of 5, 5, 8, 7 and 5 degrees, one for each of five grahas - Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus - sending the body to a sign that planet owns. There is no part index; the calculation is a boundary lookup, which Kundli Studio performs from exact longitudes.

The scheme is mirrored. An odd-numbered sign runs 5 / 5 / 8 / 7 / 5 from Aries; an even-numbered sign runs 5 / 7 / 8 / 5 / 5 from Taurus, the odd sequence read backwards. Classically the Trimsamsa is the varga consulted for difficulties and their sources. Enter a birth date, time and place and the correct table is applied to every body.

The five unequal trimsamsas

Down the odd column and up the even one, the same five rulers appear in mirror order. In a sample chart for 1 January 1990, noon IST at Chennai - fabricated, not a real birth - Jupiter sits at 11 deg 27' Gemini, an odd sign, and Venus at 12 deg 31' Capricorn, an even one.

Jupiter at 11 deg 27' of an odd sign falls in the third span and is placed in Sagittarius; Venus at 12 deg 31' of an even sign falls in its third span and is placed in Pisces - Jupiter's sign in both. Ten signs appear above; two never do.

How to read the result

The D30 is not part of the default set of six cells, so open any cell's selector and choose D-30_trimsamsa. Because each span sends a body to a sign its own lord rules, every sign in this cell can be read straight back into a lordship: Gemini or Virgo means Mercury's trimsamsa, Aries or Scorpio Mars's, Sagittarius or Pisces Jupiter's, Aquarius or Capricorn Saturn's, and Libra or Taurus Venus's.

Start with the Sun. Saravali records that sages relate the native's nature to the trimsamsa the Sun occupies at birth; in the sample chart the Sun, at 16 deg 51' Sagittarius, falls in Jupiter's span and is drawn in Sagittarius. Then read the remaining grahas from the As badge, as for any varga. In BPHS 7.1-8 the trimsamsa is the varga for evil effects, while Narasimha Rao's table of significations lists evils and punishment, the sub-conscious self and some diseases, and he groups the D27 and D30 as charts of the sub-conscious plane.

One caution on hovering: the degree in a D30 tooltip is the engine's thirtyfold figure, the D1 degree times thirty less whole thirties. It restarts at every whole degree of longitude, so it does not show how far a body has run through its 5-, 7- or 8-degree span.

Key terms

Span
One of the five unequal arcs of a sign, 5 to 8 degrees wide; a body's span, not its tooltip degree, decides the sign it is drawn in on the D30 cell.
Sun's trimsamsa
The span the Sun occupies at birth; Saravali records that sages read the native's nature from it.
Thirtyfold degree
The figure shown beside a D30 sign on hover: thirty times the D1 degree inside the sign, with whole thirties removed. It is not a position inside the span.
Sub-conscious plane
Narasimha Rao's name for the level shown by divisions 25 to 36, the D27 and D30, covering strengths, weaknesses, inherent nature and evils.
D-30_trimsamsa
The engine's key for this chart, the label to pick in a cell's selector of the chart grid; it is absent from the default grid of six.

A boundary lookup, not a division

No part index and no equal arc: each body is resolved against the five spans rather than by dividing a longitude.

Both orders, drawn correctly

The even table runs 5, 7, 8, 5, 5 degrees to Taurus, Virgo, Pisces, Capricorn and Scorpio, sharing no sign with the odd one.

Weighed in all four Vimsopaka schemes

In Shadvarga the D30 carries 1 of the 20 points, the smallest share of those six charts, against 6 for the Rasi and 5 for the Navamsa.

Common questions

What is the D30 chart in astrology?

The trimsamsa, or D30, is the one divisional chart with unequal parts: each sign is carved into five arcs belonging to Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, and a planet is placed in a sign owned by the graha whose arc it occupies, the order running forward in odd signs and reversed in even ones. Classically it is consulted for difficulties and their causes.

Why are the trimsamsa divisions unequal?

Because the 30 in D30 counts degrees, not parts. A sign's 30 degrees are shared out among five grahas as 5, 5, 8, 7 and 5, so the chart has five divisions, not thirty.

How is the trimsamsa chart read for an even sign?

With the mirrored table. Its five spans run 5, 7, 8, 5 and 5 degrees, to Taurus, Virgo, Pisces, Capricorn and Scorpio. The two tables share no destination sign, so the odd one applied to an even sign is wrong at every degree.

Can a planet be in Cancer or Leo in the D30?

No. The ten spans lead only to the ten signs owned by Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus. Cancer belongs to the Moon and Leo to the Sun, and neither luminary is given a trimsamsa, so no body can land in either.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes. The narrowest trimsamsa span is 5 degrees wide, which the ascendant crosses in roughly twenty minutes on average - faster or slower with latitude and the rising sign - so a body near a boundary such as 18 degrees changes sign on a small shift.

Why are Rahu and Ketu in the same sign in the D30?

Because a D30 sign is fixed by two things alone: a body's degree within its sign, and whether that sign is odd or even. Ketu is computed exactly opposite Rahu, so the two share a degree, and opposite signs are both odd or both even. In the 1990 sample both nodes stand at 24 deg 43' and land together in Capricorn.

Where do the Sun and Moon go in the D30?

By their degree, like any other body: a luminary is placed in whichever span it occupies, so the Sun or Moon is drawn in a sign of Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury or Venus. Neither owns a trimsamsa, and BPHS 7.13-16 says that for trimsamsa effects the Sun is akin to Mars and the Moon to Venus.
