D4 Chaturthamsa Chart Calculator
A free chaturthamsa (D4) chart calculator — every sign quartered into four parts of 7 degrees 30 minutes, each planet placed by its exact longitude.
The chaturthamsa cuts each 30-degree sign into four quarters of 7 degrees 30 minutes and re-places a planet by the quarter it occupies. The counting rule is short: the quarters go to the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th signs counted from the sign the planet already stands in — the kendras, or quadrants, of that sign. Classically it is the varga consulted for home, fixed property, land and fortune. Kundli Studio derives it from astronomical longitudes, not a printed table.
The kendras of any sign repeat that sign's movable, fixed or dual quality, so a planet's D4 sign always carries the same quality as its D1 sign — a planet in a movable sign lands in a movable sign here, and that holds for all twelve signs. Enter a birth date, time and place and the calculator draws the D4 house by house, each graha placed from its full longitude.
The four chaturthamsas of Capricorn
Capricorn's four quarters fall on the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th signs counted from Capricorn itself. The longitudes are from a sample chart cast for 1 January 1990, 12:00 noon IST, Chennai — a fabricated illustration, never a real birth — where Mercury sits at 2 degrees 00 minutes of Capricorn and Venus at 12 degrees 31 minutes.
| Quarter | Arc within Capricorn | Chaturthamsa sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 deg 00' to 7 deg 30' | Capricorn — the 1st from it |
| 2 | 7 deg 30' to 15 deg 00' | Aries — the 4th from it |
| 3 | 15 deg 00' to 22 deg 30' | Cancer — the 7th from it |
| 4 | 22 deg 30' to 30 deg 00' | Libra — the 10th from it |
Mercury, in the first quarter, stays in Capricorn; Venus, in the second, moves to Aries. Capricorn is movable, and so are Aries, Cancer and Libra — the kendras of a sign never break its quality.
How to read the result
A fresh grid already draws the D4: it is the fourth of the six default cells, after the D1, D9 and D3, labelled D-4_chaturthamsa in that cell's menu. Each box shows its sign as a number from 1, Aries, to 12, Pisces, and the box holding As is the D4's first house. Narasimha Rao points out that what a house signifies depends on the divisional chart in which it is counted, so each D4 house is read for D4 matters.
BPHS 7.1-8 reads fortunes from the Chaturthans. The Systems' Approach text in the library starts its study of assets from the birth chart's 4th house, with the Moon, Mars and Venus as significators, and takes the in-depth analysis to the turyamsa; its worked examples then read the turyamsa ascendant, its lord and the planets aspecting it.
Pointing at a body brings up its D4 sign and a figure from 0 to 30: four times the body's degree in its D1 sign, reduced below thirty, so it rises steadily across one quarter. BPHS 7.13-16 gives a hora full effect at its start, medium in the middle and none at its end, and carries that grading over to the Turyans — Turyamsa, as Narasimha Rao also calls this chart. Rahu and Ketu stay in mutually 7th signs in every D4, and the amber arudha tags are recalculated from the D4's own placements.
Key terms
- Chaturthans
- BPHS's spelling for the D4; chapter 6 makes the lords of a sign's four kendras the rulers of that sign's four chaturthamsas.
- Bhagya
- Fortune: 'Crux of Vedic Astrology' says the D4 gives Bhagya, in line with the fortunes BPHS 7.1-8 reads from this chart.
- Physical plane
- Narasimha Rao's band for vargas D1 to D12, the D4 among them: charts that show matters of the physical self, residence included.
- A4
- The 4th-house arudha, Matri Pada in the engine's naming, drawn in amber from the D4's own placements rather than carried over from the D1.
- UL (Upapada)
- The arudha of the 12th house; in D4 work Narasimha Rao's lesson notes read it as a tangible investment, beside A6 and A11.
Quartered to the arcsecond
One quarter is exactly 7 degrees 30 minutes 00 seconds, and which side of a boundary a planet falls on is read from its full longitude, never a rounded degree.
A rule you can check by hand
Every placement traces back to two numbers: the quarter, and the count of 1, 4, 7 or 10 from the occupied sign. Nothing here rests on a table you cannot reproduce.
Counted in the Vimsopaka score
The chaturthamsa is one of the sixteen charts weighed in the Shodasavarga Vimsopaka total, where it carries 0.5 of the 20 points — the same weight as eight other divisions.
Common questions
What is the D4 chart in astrology?
The D4, or chaturthamsa, cuts every sign into four quarters of 7 degrees 30 minutes and re-places each planet into the quarter its longitude falls in. Classically it is the varga consulted for home, fixed property, land and fortune.
How is the chaturthamsa calculated?
Divide the planet's degree within its sign by 7.5 and take the whole number. The first quarter keeps a planet in its own sign; the second, third and fourth send it to the 4th, 7th and 10th from that sign. Venus at 12 degrees 31 minutes of Capricorn falls in the second quarter, so it moves to Aries.
Is the chaturthamsa the same as the chaturamsa or turyamsa?
Yes. Chaturthamsa, chaturamsa and turyamsa are three names classical sources use for the same fourfold division. The calculator labels it D-4 chaturthamsa.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. A quarter spans 7 degrees 30 minutes, which the ascendant crosses in roughly half an hour on average — though the real rate swings widely with latitude and the rising sign, so a few minutes of error can carry the Ascendant into the next quarter.
Which house of the D4 chart shows the home?
Narasimha Rao's lesson notes read the D4's 4th house for the happiness a home gives and its A4 for the dwelling itself. For a purchase they add the 3rd house, 12th from the 4th, along with the 5th and 9th houses and the A6, A11 and UL tags.
Can the D4 chart show living abroad?
Narasimha Rao's textbook uses it that way: going abroad relates to residence and fortune, so it analyses the D4, where the 9th and 12th houses show foreign residence and Rahu signifies it. His lesson notes add that the D4's 3rd house, 12th from the 4th, shows leaving home.
