Kundli matching — also written kundali matching, and known as Guna Milan or gun milan — is the classical Vedic way of comparing two horoscopes for marriage. It scores eight compatibility factors, called kutas, out of a maximum of 36 gunas, from the Moon's nakshatra and sign in each chart. Kundli Studio computes all eight kutas and the special doshas from exact birth details.

Fill in both partners' birth details in the form above and press Check Compatibility: the full Ashtakoota score and each kuta's points open on the marriage matching screen, where a Nadi or Bhakoot score of zero marks the dosha of that name — the eight-kuta method a Vedic astrologer starts from, laid out clearly.

The 36 gunas of Ashtakoota matching

Guna Milan checks eight factors, each worth a fixed maximum, adding up to 36 gunas. Which points a couple scores depends on their charts; the factors and their maximums do not.

#KutaMax gunas
1Varna1
2Vashya2
3Tara (Dina)3
4Yoni4
5Graha Maitri5
6Gana6
7Bhakoot7
8Nadi8

Texts and practitioners set different minimum scores, and the score is read alongside the Nadi and Bhakoot dosha checks and the wider chart, never as a pass-or-fail verdict on a marriage.

How to read the result

After Check Compatibility the matching screen opens on each person's details — name, birth date and time, birth star and Moon sign — with a circle giving the total kuta score out of 36. Every kuta is worked from those two Moon positions, so the star and sign lines are the first thing to confirm against the birth data.

The Kuta Analysis tab then takes the eight factors one card at a time, each with the points scored against its fixed maximum: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8. Read the low cards first; Nadi and Bhakoot carry fifteen of the thirty-six points between them, and the exceptions the texts allow for those two are left for the astrologer to apply by hand.

Under the score sit two dosha cards, one per person, with separate Mars, Sun, Saturn and Rahu-Ketu figures and their total, all counted from the Lagna. Classically the guna total, these dosha figures and the two full charts are weighed together; none of them is read as a verdict alone.

Key terms

Ashtakoota
The eight-factor matching system — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi — whose maximums add up to 36 gunas.
Guna
One point of the Ashtakoota score; each kuta carries a fixed maximum, from 1 for Varna up to 8 for Nadi.
Nadi
The kuta worth 8, taken from the Nadi group of each birth star; two stars in the same group score 0.
Bhakoot
The kuta worth 7, taken from the distance between the two Moon signs; it scores either the full 7 or 0.
Graha Maitri
The kuta worth 5, taken from the friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs.
Tara (Dina)
The kuta worth 3, counted between the two birth stars around the 27 nakshatras in both directions, 1.5 points each way.

All eight kutas scored

Varna through Nadi — each kuta's points and the full Guna Milan total out of 36.

Nadi and Bhakoot checks

Nadi (8 gunas) and Bhakoot (7) on rows of their own. Classical texts list exceptions that can cancel either dosha; the calculator shows the plain score and leaves those exceptions to the astrologer.

From two real charts

Computed from both partners' exact birth details — the Moon's nakshatra, sign and lord — not a name-only guess.

Common questions

What is kundli matching?

Kundli matching (Guna Milan, or Ashtakoota) compares two horoscopes across eight factors called kutas, scored out of 36 gunas, using each person's Moon nakshatra and sign. It is the classical Vedic method for weighing marriage compatibility.

How many gunas should match?

Texts and practitioners set different minimum scores out of 36, so there is no single pass mark. The number is read alongside the Nadi and Bhakoot dosha checks and the rest of both charts — it is guidance for an astrologer to interpret, not a pass-or-fail score.

What are Nadi and Bhakoot dosha?

Nadi dosha arises when both charts share the same Nadi, the factor worth 8 gunas; Bhakoot dosha comes from certain distances between the two Moon signs, worth 7. Classical texts list exceptions that can cancel either one; this calculator reports the plain kuta scores and does not apply those exceptions.

Do I need exact birth times?

Yes, for an accurate result — the Moon's nakshatra and sign, which drive every kuta, depend on an accurate birth time and place for each person.
